Alaskan cartoonist, Peter Dunlap-Shohl

By Daybreak Staff 4:19 PM December 11, 2014
He was a cartoonist for the Anchorage Daily News for more than a quarter of a century; now he shares animations and political cartoons with the world via his blog “The Frozen Grin.”
Cartoonist Peter Dunlap-Shohl joined Daybreak Thursday to discuss his time at ADN, his
current blogs and his work with Parkinson’s disease awareness.
Being a cartoonist was a childhood dream of his, he said.
“When they ask you, ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’ I said cartoonist and stuck with it,” he said. “So, be careful when you ask that question.”
Dunlap-Shohl described why, after leaving ADN, he decided to start his blog, “The Frozen Grin.”
“Well, when I left the paper, I still had lots of stuff to say, and it’s so easy to get a blog now,” he said. “You become sort of whatever is on your blog, that’s your credibility right there.”
After describing the stories behind a few of his most recent cartoons, Dunlap-Shohl talked about his other venture, “Off & On, The Alaska Parkinson’s Rag.”
“I write about things that have happened to me and put them into cartoon form so people understand why people are behaving the way they are or whatever, if they have Parkinson’s,” he explained.
